1974 Season

[Previous Season] | [Next Season]

Averages and results are available.

For the first time in compiling the archive, the staff have actually beaten the students.

In this legendary "extreme age and guile" verses "youth and natural talent" grudge match, the best results so far are a winning draw in 1972 and 3 loosing draws in 1962, 1964 and 1973.

Match report

The students, batting first, score steadily and in the 8th over are 32 for no wicket. However, the scene is set by Robin Leake who bowles the first maiden of the match. This fires up Hugh Bell, who rips through the high order batting taking 3 wickets, for 3 runs, in the next 3 overs. Best pleased with his efforts, Bell (now totally exhausted) is taken off in order to recuperate for a second spell.

Although A. Lakehahi is bowled by Roger Downie in the 18th over, the students bat steadily taking the score on to 78. Bell, now suitably refreshed, is brought back on for a second spell and bowles badly. Luckily Downie breaks through in the 35th over: bowling Hughs and Curry in his 11th over. Bell, not to be upstaged, gets the last batsman out in the next over, finishing the match with 4-28. Downie finishes a tight 3-16.

The students are all out for 80. Top scorer is A. Gibb with 31.

The Staff start terribly with Lionel Glassey LBW first ball and G. Allen out caught, both in the second over to White. The wickets keep falling until the steady batting of Roger Lucus, partnered by C. Stanley, put on a stand of 44 to take the score to 72, before Stanley is bowled by the accurate Students opening bowler: S. Sleeves.

It is left for Leake and Lucus to knock off the 9 remaining runs and win the match by 2 wickets. Lucus scoring an unbeaten 48.
