1977 Season[Previous Season] | [Next Season] Averages and results available. Report of the Hon. Secretary, as presented at the AGM: The playing record of the Club in 1977 was as follows:
In addition, the "Rest of the Staff" defeated the Zoology Department by 30 runs in what has become an enjoyable annual fixture. In the Strathclyde League the record was:
and the Club finished third with the sane total of points as 2nd Helensburgh who had however played one less match. In the Strathclyde League Cup, the Club defeated North Kelvinside P.P. before succumbing to Woodhall in the semi-final This record narks a slight improvement on that of the previous season, but it also disguises the strangely inconsistent character of the side's performances. There were some striking victories against strong clubs, but these were notched by inexplicably poor exhibitions against clubs we would normally expect to beat. Over the season as a whole, however, the better performances outweighed the disasters, and the final position of third in the Strathclyde League is the highest that we have attained in that competition. The bowling was the side's strongest point; Mr. R. Downie took 55 wickets, and Mr. R. Cogdell, Mr. M. Yuille, and Mr. 0. Jones each took more than 20 wickets, in every case at a cost of less than 12 runs apiece. The Club was also fortunate in being able to call on an experienced player, Mr. J. Tomlinson, for some evening matches, and he took 16 wickets at a cost of 7 runs apiece. The batting was more variable, but special mention should be made of Mr. A. Gellen's return to form after a lean season the previous year; he scored 557 runs in 1977 at an average of nearly 40. Mr. Downie, in addition to being the leading wicket-taker, contributed some vigorous innings, and his keen and competitive captaincy seldom failed to bring out the best in his players. Indoor nets were held during the winter, and again proved to be successful and popular, with on one occasion as many as thirteen members present. It is the Hon. Secretary's pleasant duty to record the Club's gratitude to the University for permitting the use of its facilities at Garscadden, and to Mr. Gabbitas and his staff for preparing the wickits. Mr. Gabbitas's skill in this direction received on appropriate tribute when the Strathclyde League requested that the Final of its Cup competition should be played at Garscadden. Our thanks too go to Mrs. Gabbitas for providing ample teas; to Miss Patricia Forguson and Mrs. Barbara Boggs for secretarial assistance; and to those wives, families and friends of the Club who chauffeured loans, helped with teas when Mrs, Gabbitas was on holiday, and generally acted as an unofficial supporters Club.
