1984 Season[Previous Season] | [Next Season] Averages, captain's
report (as minuted at the AGM) What the papers said...Glasgow University Staff beat Irvine 2nd XI to win their opening Strathclyde League match. Irvine were all bowled out for 58 with Robin Leake, Owen Jones, Richard Cogdell and Peter Richardson all taking two wickets each. After ten overs the Staff were 7 for the loss of Jones. Tea was then taken and thereafter they pushed to victory at 59 for three with Joe Houston 28 no. Glasgow University Staff played a friendly against Glasgow Airport Staff and bowled out the opposition for only 5 on an exceptionally difficult wicket. Ian Jury (3 for 0) and Robin Leake (4 for 1) led the rout and Owen Jones took three catches. Earlier Jury top scored on 15 as the Staff struggled to 57 all out. The good early season form shown by the Glasgow University Staff XI continued last Saturday when for the third time in succession their opening batsmen put together a stand in excess of fifty. Indeed Lionel Glassey (29) and Barrie Walters took over ninety runs from the attack of Glasgow Accies 2nd XI before the former was out. Walters went on to compile an excellent 82 and the innings was closed on 173 for 3. Accies, in turn, could only come up with 140 of which A Milne made 43 as Glassey took 3 for 17. As the wickets steadily tumbled the main talking point was a brace of incredible catches. First Joe Houston, close to the wicket, held a hard sharp shot destined for four. Then Walters in the gully clutched an equally hard-struck ball. On Monday evening The Staff fared less well going down to Maccabi in an Evening league match for the first time in ages. The staff meet Irvine in a Strathclyde League match tomorrow and, again away, face North Kelvinside in the Evening League on Tuesday. Glasgow University Staff met North Kelvinside in the Strathclyde League last Sunday. The latter batted first and were in early trouble at 11 for 2. However the middle order came to the rescue with Khafil Mahdi top scoring with 46. Other notable contributers were Herbie Constance with a lusty 25 n.o. Bindi Monon (24) and Bill Gardner who followed up his 105 for the reserves the day before with 20. The most economical of the staff bowlers was Bob Carroll, 2 for 23 as NK made 140 for 8. At the start of the Staff's innings David Craig bowled tightly as usual, conceding only 4 runs in eight overs. As a result when the Staff tried to catch up with the clock, wickets fell. When the task was hopeless, Barrie Walters, who had an early head knock, retired for 32 and Roger Downie included a six in his 24, but the Staff were still well short with 112 for 9. Glasgow University Staff beat Woodhall off the last ball of their Strathclyde League match to open up the top of the table. These two plus North Kelvinside now all have a 75% record. The win came when the last pair, Robin Leake and Jon Barns, scampered a bye. Earlier Woodhall were restricted to 111 for 8 largely because of tight bowling by Robin Leake (2 for 14), Ian Jury (2 for 13) and Roger Downie (1 for 15). Architect of the Staff victory was Barrie Walters who scored 57. When he was out thirty runs were still required for victory and contributions from virtually every member of the tail laid on the final climax. |
