1994 Season

This year saw the first century for the club for a mere 27 years. Wasim Khalifa was the man who did it, carrying his bat for 106 against a Hillhead side containing Grant Parmenter, and then scoring another a week later. Even more remarkably our senior pro, the evergreen John Barnes, was at the other end back in 1967, as a mere stripling, when the last century was scored and was still at the crease more than quarter of a century later. Living history!

One of the perks of playing for the Uni Staff is that the excuses for defeat are that more inventive. The Staff being made up largely of academics, are not quite on the same planet as everyone else and therefore after-game analysis of why we lost have a certain rarefied air to them. For example, after our obligatory first round Small Clubs Cup exit, a comprehensive thrashing by Kingsway, the agreed theory was: "We lost because we bowled better". I kid you not. Perhaps all teams need some self-delusion at dark times to keep them playing, but the Staff have raised this to more grandiose heights than ever before.

The University meanwhile, acknowledging that Glasgow has the worst sports facilities in the UK, have promised us a brand new ground in the Garscube Estate ready for the 1996 season. Half the club are of the opinion that pigs may be seen flying first, but we live in hope.
