Bute began rolling the pitch that afternoon, when the heavens
erupted. Fearing that the pitch would be "unplayable",
they continued on rolling through the rain. What resulted was
something that resembled more of a Som battlefield than that which
cricket should be played on.
John Briggs, as astute as ever, took one look and declared: "You
can't play cricket on that! we'll be lucky if we make 23".
The staff finish up 221-4 and win the match by 81 runs. Briggs
makes his then highest score of 98*. And participates in a club
record 5th wicket partnership of 98, with Matt Baker 53*, from 9
overs.
It was this incite and reading of the game that prompted us to
elect him team coach and master tactician.
