Lionel Glassey - 500 wickets and 5000 runs - click to enlarge

Highlight of the season was our skipper putting the head of the Thai triads, who make the Borgias seem pleasant people, in jail for murdering his brother. This gained him front-page coverage in the Sunday Times and the much needed oxygen of publicity for the club. 14 new players turned up and we launched a second team, the inaccurately named "Garscube Gazelles".

Miffed, the first team held a competition for their own soubriquet and are delighted to announce the winner. In future we shall be known as "Old Viagrans" a perfect match of cricket traditionalism and the 21st century.

Despite the new members, the average age of our Firsts remained stubbornly at an absurd 42, with all the concomitant catalogue of injuries that brings. One of our guys even got injured getting out of his car. Somehow though, we ended up third in Division 3 of the Western Union to which we'd just been promoted, only losing 2 out of 14 matches. The wickets were fairly evenly shared round, but Matt Baker with 37 victims at 10.9 came out top of the bowling.

One guy, Jim Liddell, joined us 8 years after hanging up his boots and scored 100 in his first knock, but despite this the Batsman of the Year Award was deservedly won by Extras with 402 runs at an average of 28.7.

Curiously we were deemed to have suffered a losing draw against Shawholm, when after dismissing them for 148 we ended on 148-7. A tie or a winning draw appeared more equitable but thems apparently the rules.

Subsequently, in their wisdom, the League decided to promote Shawholm with 68%, while ignoring divisional winners Victoria on 92% and ourselves on 76% simply because we don't have juniors. What the point of us running juniors when National League sides West of Scotland and Hillhead, complete with their professional coaches, are both within a mile radius of us is beyond me.
