Extending Clydesdale's Square
The extension to the cricket square at Clydesdale Cricket Club in September
1997 shows how the Garscube square will also be constructed; photographs

The
area excavated for 6 pitches, has been divided into three by planks
and 2 pitches are being laid at a time.
The loam is being laid, heeled-in, and raked
in a series of layers by Gordon Curry and David Duncan of the Scottish
Cricket Union.

applied, compressed and raked for the first
set of two pitches.
At Garscube, we intend to heel-in all the loam, and will not be
using a compressor.

Heeling-in
the loam. This has been described as a rain-dance, and involves
a series of short overlapping steps with the weight fully on the
heels.
This is designed to compress the loam and remove air,
and hence prevent later subsidence; heeling in is believed
to be better than any mechanical compression methods.
