Extending Clydesdale's Square

The extension to the cricket square at Clydesdale Cricket Club in September 1997 shows how the Garscube square will also be constructed; photographs courtesy of Chris Wilson, please click each picture to enlarge.

The loam is being laid, heeled-in, and raked in a series of layers by Gordon Curry and David Duncan of the Scottish Cricket Union.

At Garscube, we intend to heel-in all the loam, and will not be using a compressor.

Clydesdale wicket construction 5 - click to enlargeHeeling-in the loam. This has been described as a rain-dance, and involves a series of short overlapping steps with the weight fully on the heels.

This is designed to compress the loam and remove air, and hence prevent later subsidence; heeling in is believed to be better than any mechanical compression methods.
